Karyn's on Green and the Karyn's Cooked location on Wells have closed permanently.
They are *mostly* vegan - Karyn transparently states on her website, and the servers are also trained to explain, that a few, clearly-identified items contain honey. If you're NHV (non-honey vegan), ask your server to help you avoid those items.
This is a national chain (started in Colorado) but it has only a handful of locations nationwide, with several being here in Chicago.
All-vegan menu. Ordering is at counter before sitting down. They have a great beverage selection that includes a few bottled beers as well as house-made lavender lemonade and hot chai.
This place has clearly marked vegetarian options that can also be made vegan. They prepare their tofu several different ways that are both good: a flavorful dark-brown marinated tofu, and a crispy fried tofu. The vegan options are not numerous but they are delicious and satisfying.
This place is a tiny storefront with three tables squished between a CVS and a Mediterranean restaurant. If you order over the phone instead of with GrubHub, delivery is pretty fast. Their veggie chick'n isn't vegan but the veggie fish is. I'm a fan of their vegan ceviche. They don't have a website, but they're on Yelp: http://www.yelp.com/biz/vegetarian-express-chicago
While the Chicago Diner proudly proclaims it's been "meat free since '83," Original Soul Vegetarian has been providing vegan food since 1980. Everything from their seitan ribs to perfectly tender (but never mushy) collard greens, is delicious. Hours and info on their website:
