Soul Vegan is not a restaurant, and not to be confused with Original Soul Vegetarian. It is a producer of prepared vegan foods that are available within grocery stores, convenience stores throughout Chicago, and even the airport.
Stores that carry Soul Vegan prepared foods
From one of their featured reviews:
Despite being a tiny little vegan outpost deep in the hood, it is worth the pilgrimage. Good soul food is hard to find, even in Chicago. Good vegan food is hard to find on the South Side. Put these two things together well, add some live jazz and you have won my eternal devotion.
This is a national chain (started in Colorado) but it has only a handful of locations nationwide, with several being here in Chicago.
All-vegan menu. Ordering is at counter before sitting down. They have a great beverage selection that includes a few bottled beers as well as house-made lavender lemonade and hot chai.
While the Chicago Diner proudly proclaims it's been "meat free since '83," Original Soul Vegetarian has been providing vegan food since 1980. Everything from their seitan ribs to perfectly tender (but never mushy) collard greens, is delicious. Hours and info on their website:
From their description:
"We can talk about food, share recipes, vent about our struggles of living in a herbivore world, or talk about whatever. Those who are interested in becoming vegan are more than welcome to join!"
